HONG KONG — An An, the world’s oldest male giant panda dwelling in captivity, died Thursday at a concept park in Hong Kong.
He was 35, or 105 in human a long time.
Officers at Ocean Park, a marine mammal park, oceanarium and academic topic park, reported An An was euthanized just after signals that his well being experienced been steadily deteriorating in the final couple of months, “with his meals consumption declining bit by bit but progressively.” By Sunday, he had stopped consuming stable meals at all, they said.
They added that An An had been mostly inactive in his final times and had received health care care to reduce soreness.
Veterinarians from the park and the community Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Section manufactured the selection to euthanize An An in consultation with the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Large Panda.
“An An has introduced us fond memories with various heart-warming times,” Paulo Pong, chairman of the Ocean Park Company, said in a statement. “His cleverness and playfulness will be dearly missed.”
Visitors had been invited to leave condolence messages in guest books outside the house the panda enclosure and on the park’s official Fb web site.
An An arrived in the Chinese territory of Hong Kong in 1999 as a reward from Beijing along with Jia Jia, who was the world’s oldest woman large panda. Jia Jia was 38 when she died in 2016.
Ocean Park has two other pandas, feminine Ying Ying and male Le Le, who arrived in 2007. Pandas are notoriously undesirable at breeding both in captivity and in the wild, and Ying Ying and Le Le did not thrive at mating obviously until 2020 (the pair has still to reproduce).
